Good Friday Worship (7:00 p.m.)

April 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

An Explanation of the Tenebrae Service (Service of Darkness)

  • Tenebrae (pronounced ten-e-bray) is a Latin word that means ‘darkness.’ Jesus, “the Light of the World,” was extinguished on the cross.  When Jesus died, the earth became dark.  After each reading, one of the seven Tenebrae candles will be extinguished.  The approaching darkness makes us aware of Christ’s approaching death.
  • The Christ Candle is the tallest candle on the altar. As it is carried out of the sanctuary, we are reminded that Christ has died.  After a moment of silence, it will be carried back to the altar.   The light shining the darkness anticipates the resurrection of Jesus.
  • The Strepitus (Latin for ‘great noise’) will be heard after the Christ candle is carried out of the sanctuary. The strepitus signifies the earthquake at Christ’s death, reminding us of Jesus’ words, “It is finished!”  The sacrifice is complete.  Secondly, it signifies the closing of the tomb in which Jesus lay.  Finally, it foreshadows the earthquake that accompanied Christ’s resurrection in victory on the third day.
  • Offering will be placed in the offering plates as you leave the sanctuary.
  • Leaving in Silence reminds us of the followers of Jesus who left Golgotha and went home to contemplate all that had happened, only to return to the tomb to find it empty three days later.

Our worship continues on Easter morning…
